Stadium Security to Limit Beer Sales

August 6, 2005

Fans in soccer stadiums during the 2006 World Cup in Germany looking for a cold brew to quench their thirst may be in for a non-alcoholic surprise, depending on the match they decide to attend. In adherence to rules from soccer's governing body, FIFA, frothy mugs of alcohol-reduced or alcohol-free beer will be all that's on tap during the tournament's hotly-contested matches. Regular-strength beer will, however, still be for sale at games that are not classified as "high risk." But that's not a reason to get out of control at other matches, according to Bavarian Interior Minister Günther Beckstein. "Sports and alcohol are not ideal partners," he told reporters. "If problems do arise, we will return to stricter regulations." Outside the stadiums fans will be able to freely choose the strength -- and amount -- of the beer they want for their celebrations or mourning.
