Standoff deepens between US and Venezuela

The US military has killed 11 people on a boat that US President Trump says was carrying illicit drugs from Venezuela. The attack dramatically escalated tensions between the US and Venezuela, whose president Nicolas Maduro has vowed to protect his country's sovereignty against what he calls "US imperial aggression."

The Trump administration claims the vessel was linked to drug cartels allegedly run by Venezuelan President Maduro.

In response, Venezuela is mobilizing troops and highlighting its strategic alliance with China, which has invested billions in the country.
