Stonehenge, England

Elisabeth Yorck von WartenburgSeptember 13, 2016

The stones at Stonehenge, a prehistoric monument in southwestern England, are the source of countless myths, since they were erected by a culture that left no written records.

Some believe druids built Stonehenge, others say the sorcerer Merlin did. Not likely. Archeologists estimate that the site was constructed between 3,000 and 2,000 BC. Stonehenge's function remains a matter for speculation, but it is the site of several burial grounds and it might have been a place of healing. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
