In neighborhoods where crime gangs recruit young members, the group works to prevent school drop-outs and criminality while improving young people's prospects.

Maestri di Strada was founded in the early 2000s by former teacher Cesare Moreno. With its team of teachers, youth workers and psychologists, it provides workshops and one-on-one support to more than 500 young people - many of whom are growing up in very difficult circumstances.

Seventeen-year-old Francesco used to have problems with aggression and often skipped school. Thanks to his mentor, Maria, he regularly attends his new school and is now training to become a chef. Fifteen-year-old Concita has also benefited from the Maestri di Strada: after joining a theater group, she’s gained the confidence to pursue her dream career as an actor or a fashion designer.

Maestri di Strada does most of its work in Ponticelli, a district controlled by the Neapolitan Camorra criminal organization. The Street Teachers are respected here because they also help family members of mafia clans. Rather than academic performance, Maestri di Strada prioritizes cooperation and togetherness, offering young people a life beyond criminality.

The group has its headquarters in a dilapidated former school building. Despite limited resources and a lack of government support, the Street Teachers are determined not to give up. One day, they hope to set up schools across Italy based on their educational approaches.
