Struck Defends Army's Foreign Involvements

March 11, 2004

German Defense Minister Peter Struck defended his plans for military reform before the parliament. In support of proposed increases in the army's foreign involvement, Struck pointed out that Germany's interests can be defended abroad as well as at home. "Germany is also defended in the Hindu Kush, " Struck told ARD television, referring to the mountain range in Afghanistan, where German troops are currently stationed. The defense minister rejected demands by a number of opposition Christian Democratic Union representatives who are seeking a change in the constitution to solidify the Bundeswehr's role as a defender against domestic terrorism. The new Bundeswehr will not be "troops to help the police," Struck said.
