For mourners, the grief feels as profound as it did in the immediate aftermath of the attacks, as DW witnessed in Re'im on the second anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack. An Israeli community near the site of the Nova Music Festival, Re'im was among the places where Hamas gunmen killed and abducted festivalgoers that day.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas-led militants launched a surprise ambush on the Nova, an open-air trance music festival in Israel's western Negev desert, just north of the Gaza border. The assault on the festival was part of a wider Hamas terror attack that included barrages of rockets and raids on army bases and nearby farming communities. It is believed to be the deadliest civilian massacre in Israel's history, with 378 people killed.

Two years on, survivors and bereaved families have come together to remember and heal, recounting the terror and trauma they endured — but, above all, their resilience. For more, watch DW's report from the site in Re'im.
