Syria: Dialog of Religion and Cultures

Ethnic and religious tensions are a constant source of conflict in the Middle East. Nonetheless, many there believe that dialog is the way forward.

In cooperation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), DW-AKADEMIE ran a course in 2007 which emphasized just such a dialog. 12 radio journalists from Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Iraq met in Aleppo, Syria with one goal in mind -- to bolster the dialog between religion and cultures with their programs.

Participants were particularly interested in discussions highlighting specific aspects of religious and cultural dialog. One discussion included, for example, an archbishop of the Syrian Orthodox Church and the Mufti of Aleppo.

Topics discussed within the subtext of religious and cultural dialog included divorce in Islam, the suffering of Iraqi refugees and the impact of tourism on Aleppo. The discussion programs were supplemented by radio interviews, statements, short reports and surveys.
