In late 2024, Ahmad al-Sharaa led Islamist rebels in a lightning offensive to drive dictator Bashar Assad from power. A 14-year civil war seemed to have stagnated, and the operation caught the regime off guard.

In November 2024, Syria saw a dramatic shift as Islamist rebels led by Ahmad al Sharaa captured Aleppo, forcing Bashar Assad's forces to retreat. Within weeks, Damascus fell and Assad fled to Moscow, ending 50 years of family rule.

Weakened allies and mounting regional conflicts sped up the regime's collapse, leaving millions hoping for stability under a new leadership.
