The deal followed hours after the Syrian army seized oil and gas fields and two major northeastern towns in clashes with the SDF. Fighting earlier this month has displaced tens of thousands.

Syrian government forces have taken control of the northeastern town of Tabqa after days of fighting that pushed US-backed, Kurdish-led SDF forces east of the Euphrates.

Since the ousting of the Assad regime, the new Syrian government led by Ahmed al-Sharaa has grappled with integrating Kurdish-held areas and populations into the central state.

Some residents say they welcomed the army's arrival after years of SDF rule, adding that the truce has brought respite.
