Taiwan Rescue Efforts Intensify

13/08/09August 13, 2009

Taiwan deployed thousands more troops to rescue people trapped by landslides on Thursday. The death toll from the floods and landslides triggered last week by Typhoon Morakot has risen to over 100.

Officials said the numbers could rise dramatically as hundreds were still missing.

Although the defence ministry said it was racing to find survivors, relatives were angry, claiming that the government's reaction to the disaster had been slow and rescue efforts inefficient.

President Ma Ying-jeou travelled to the county of Yunlin on Thursday to inspect the relief efforts and was confronted by desperate family members.
