What happened in Tanzania during the unrest that followed the October election remains unclear. New evidence points to killings and grave human rights abuses by security forces in the second largest city, Mwanza.

After Tanzania’s election in 2025, protests erupted nationwide, followed by an internet shutdown and a harsh security crackdown. President Samia Suluhu Hassan denies state‑led violence, but a DW investigation found evidence of lethal force in Mwanza. Witnesses say unarmed civilians were executed in Kisesa and Mji Mwema, with soldiers later removing the bodies. Ballistic analysis points to AK‑47‑type weapons used by police and military. A leaked police report lists 68 dead civilians, while hundreds remain missing. The government has not responded to inquiries.
