In the past, scientists assumed that every form of cancer shared common characteristics - that all lung cancers were alike, all breast cancers were similar, and so forth. Nowadays, we know that even within the same type of cancer, every tumor has a unique genetic profile and characteristics. This knowledge is now being used to develop targeted therapies.
