While living standards have improved for most people in Russia, the human rights situation there has deteriorated. Press freedom has been restricted, the political opposition gagged and most demonstrations are quickly dispersed by police, often with the threat or actual use of force. Prominent opposition leaders such as the former Chess Champion Gary Kasparov have been arrested, others have lost their livelihoods. Kasparov's United Citizens Front continues to lead resistance: and it's mostly young people who are hearing the call.
