A 13-year-old boy was shot dead and 68 others were injured in clashes with security forces in Port Said, Egypt, after fans of the al-Masry football club turned out to protest its two-season ban.

"Hundreds of angry fans clashed with military police after the decision was announced," one witness told Reuters.

The protests had begun on Friday afternoon and continued through Saturday, with police firing warning shots and tear gas to break up the crowd.

Teenager Belal Mamdouh was killed by a gunshot wound to the back and 68 people were injured during the clashes, according to a medical source.

The club was banned by the Egyptian Football Association after a stadium riot in February left 74 people dead. Fans had flooded the field after al-Masry won a match against Cairo's Al Ahli.

Port Said Stadium, where the riot had taken place, would be closed for three years, the association had ruled.

The football club could be reinstated to the Egyptian Premier League in the 2013/14 season, Egypt's ruling soccer body said.
