Thailand-Cambodia border spat revives old fears for locals

The border crossing at Sa Kaeo is usually a busy transit point between Thailand and Cambodia. But since a clash between troops in May, the crossing is closed several times a day. This has disrupted travel and commerce.
Both countries have readied troops along their shared border, raising concerns of prolonged tensions. The military claims the closures are not disrupting local life. However, Thais living on the Cambodian border have seen this before.
"I'm worried about my family and relatives in our village and community. We experienced this once before in 2011," Suthian Phewchan, a farmer, told DW.
"Back then, no one remained in the village. It became deserted. I don't want to see that happen again," he added.
Locals are prepared for the worst, but they would prefer a peaceful resolution.
