The fortieth anniversary of the 1968 protests is looming and Götz Aly, one of the original protestors, looks back on events. His latest book draws parallels between the student movements and Nazi totalitarianism. Peter Schneider's new book also criticizes the students' readiness to violence but also sees the rebels' visions as well as their inevitable failure. We look at two books about 1968
