The Black Forest

Elisabeth Yorck von WartenburgJuly 22, 2015

Forests, lakes and gorges: the Black Forest is a natural paradise. It is always lovely here: in winter for skiers and in the summer for hikers.

The Black Forest is Germany's biggest mountain range - stretching from Karlsruhe to the Swiss border. In places the trees are so dense that they appear "black," hence the name "Black Forest." The region counts some 20 million overnight stays annually.

In the Black Forest, tradition and customs are very prevalent; the cuckoo clocks, for instance, are known the world over. The first one of these was crafted in the middle of the 18th century, and its design has not really changed much since then. In Schonach and Triberg, both traditional cuckoo clock manufacturing centers, visitors can admire the biggest examples, measuring over 15 meters.
