The automobile of the future does without a driver, but still manages to produce a safer ride than any human could. How does an autonomous car learn to see, to judge situations and to react intuitively in traffic?

That is the big challenge that Christoph Stiller and Martin Lauer, researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, have taken on. They have created a 'cognitive car' they've named AnnieWAY, and entered it in a competition, the Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge in the Netherlands.
