For the first time since the 1970s a US ambassador is heading to Taipei for official talks with the Taiwanese government. Until now US policy was not to recognise Taiwan's government. Steve Tsang from the University of London's School of Oriental and Asia Studies, SOAS, says the change in status is aimed at limiting in-coming US president Joe Biden's options in the region.
