The German parliament votes this week on the European fiscal compact and the European Stability Mechanism, the ESM.

Although a majority on both is considered secure, the chorus of critics and skeptics across the political spectrum is growing. Some fear a weakening of the euro, while others say rescuing it would put most of the burden on the poorest.
