The European parliament in Strasbourg on Thursday approved the use of EU funds to finance some stem cell research .

There was a lot of opposition to the vote in parliament, thanks to a fierce debate in many EU countries about ethical concerns.In Germany embryonic stem cell research has been allowed under strict conditions since 2002.
