The most modern research ship on the seas recently embarked on its official maiden voyage. Scientists on board the "Sonne" will be exploring the Indian and Pacific oceans, where the insights gathered by the team could help to answer questions concerning climate change, ecosystems, mineral resources, and life in the deep sea.

Some two-thirds of the earth’s surface is located over 3,000 meters below sea level, and is largely unexplored. The "Sonne” is a 116-meter-long laboratory fitted with a wealth of sensors and other high-tech devices.
