The future status of Jerusalem remains one of the most difficult issues and the most crucial to any lasting peace: Israel annexed East Jerusalem in the 1967 Six Day War and has built up Jewish settlements in and around it since then - but Palestinians view that part of the city as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
