2011 wasn't the strongest year for German cinema. Lowest-common denominator comedies directed by and starring Til Schweiger and Matthias Schweighöfer were box office hits but the more challenging work, including successful experiments with the science fiction and horror genre, were flops.

At the big film festivals, Germany's name was mentioned mainly as a co-producer. The one exception: Wim Wenders. The old master returned with PINA, which won the European Film Prize for best documentary. The 3-D dance film about the late chorographer Pina Bausch shows that German film can be innovative and captivating. KINO takes a very personal look back at the cinema year that was.
