The Governor

March 10, 2026

After the founding of the State of Israel, Zvi Elpeleg served as ‘military governor for the control of Arab civilians.’

For decades, Zvi Elpeleg was regarded as a respected public servant and family man. But this image starts to crumble when his granddaughter, filmmaker Danel Elpeleg, starts looking more closely into his past.

Based on private letters, official documents, and conversations with people who knew him, a complex story unfolds - one that is both personal and political.

The filmmaker not only uncovers a hidden family secret, but also confronts the moral gray zones of Israeli history. How far does the power of the state extend into the lives of its citizens? How does this power shape people's identities across generations?

"The Governor” is more than a portrait of a man — it is a critical reflection on control, responsibility, and the mechanisms of state authority. With haunting archival footage, personal interviews, and an intimate narrative style, the result is a multi-layered work that raises questions about power, morality, and memory.
