Teaching the Holocaust to Germany's Generation Z

October 5, 2021

What connection do German school students still have with the Holocaust today? Germany's Generation Z, born between 1996 and 2009, faces a history lesson that is far removed from them, yet still moving.

This documentary follows four students over five years, from 2014 to 2019. In history class, they repeatedly engage with the topic of the Nazi era and the Holocaust. Does Germany’s past still influence their values, political ideas and social attitudes?

How is it talked about in their families? The film is shot as the extreme right gains strength, and both xenophobia and anti-Semitism flare up again and again. At a time in which Germany’s collective memory is fragile and multi-faceted, it is a warning not to forget the past.
