More men are dreaming of a career as a top model. But the competition is fierce. At places like the Hamburg Model Academy, which offers a sort of crash course for aspiring models, they learn the basics.

Those who really make it can earn daily rates in the four-digit range — and see themselves on giant billboards.

At the Model Academy, run by Hamburg modeling agency Modelwerk, young men learn how to pose, work the camera, and stride elegantly down the runway.

It's a ruthless business: Many agencies quickly weed out models who don't make an immediate impression. The industry is looking for fresh faces, preferably with experience.

"We send guys who are serious about it abroad for several months first," explains Claudia Midolo, founder and head of the Modelwerk agency. In places like Turkey, Vietnam, or Mexico, they gain practical experience, earn money, and yet remain fresh for the western market.

A models' reach on social media is also becoming increasingly important. Having many followers is a clear advantage when it comes to landing good jobs.
