The Music’s Over
June 22, 2015The term “Club 27” has emerged in pop culture. All you need to gain automatic membership is to be a star and die at age 27. Among the members are Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Brian Jones, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse. This lineup seems to feed a cliché that has been associated with many legends in the industry: musicians live fast, play hard and die young.
This documentary delves into the origins of popular music, in San Francisco’s hippie quarter Haight-Ashbury, New York, Middle England and of course Compton in LA, the Mecca of Gangsta Rap. It’s only in these places that you really get a true sense of the mythical, excessive and fascinating symbiosis between music and death. Artists from a range of decades describe their relationship with dying and death, be it a metaphysical experience, denial, melancholy or violence.
