March 21 is the International Day of Forests. To mark the occasion, we are shining a light on Palatinate Forest in southwestern Germany. It is ideal for nature lovers and hikers.
Great views
If you are craving some adventure and pristine nature, set off for the Palatinate Forest. Its diverse landscapes, views and quiet are very rewarding. The verdant region is perfect for extended hikes.
A network of hiking trails
There are 10 campsites in the Palatinate Forest, which is ideal if you are planning multi-day treks through the area. Each campsite accommodates up to 18 hikers each. Do note that the sites are open only between April and October.
Unspoiled nature
The hiking trails lead through fields, meadows and kilometers of unspoiled forest. Campsites are hidden away in the forest. Visitors are sent the respective camp coordinates only when they have booked a place. If you are lucky, you might spot some deer, foxes, wild boar or raccoons on the way.
Hiking through vineyards
Those keen on relaxed day trip can explore the region's many quaint villages and adjacent vineyards. Get a snack and something refreshing to drink at a local tavern, or simply settle down in the shade to relax and unwind.
Local delicacies
Several hiking trails lead past or even through vineyards. If you are visiting in late summer, you might get to sample some sweet, young and cloudy wine known regionally as Federweisser. It is traditionally served with delicious onion tart.
View from Landeck Castle
Numerous castles and castle ruins dot the landscape. While some can be reached only on foot, others are accessible by car. It's a steep ascent to Landeck Castle, though definitely worth it. Here walkers can rest their tired feet and enjoy a well deserved snack as the castle restaurant.
Deserted ruins beckon explorers
Hikers will often come across fascinating castle ruins that offer breathtaking views across fields and forest nearby. You might even spot another castle, or whatever is left of it. In short, this part of Germany will certainly appeal to the intrepid.
Sunset
Once you have reached the campsite after a long day of hiking, take off your heavy backpack and settle down to enjoy the sunset. Listen to the birds chirping as you prepare your well-deserved evening meal in the greater outdoors.
Relaxing by the campfire
These forest campsites are charmingly rustic: You will find little more than a fireplace, a toilet hut, and a spot to pitch your tent. But that is exactly what makes hiking holidays in the Palatinate Forest so appealing, letting you reconnect with nature and appreciate the little things.
