The Teutoburg Forest boasts hundreds of kilometers of hiking trails that weave through the hills and mountains. Hikers pass by bizarre rock formations and cliffs, majestic fortresses and castles, and idyllic towns and villages. Some 2,000 years ago, a group of German tribes defeated Roman legions - a memory that's immortalized by the Hermann monument.

Our journey begins in the picturesque city of Detmold. The 53-meter-high Hermann monument lies just southwest of the city. The Externsteine, a rock formation not far from the monument, is also a popular tourist destination. So is the town of Bad Iburg in the Teutoburg Forest. Bad Iburg is known as a spa town, but it also features a stunning castle complex and former monastery. After that, we move on to the city of Osnabrück. It's a university town with a historic city hall that was the site of the Peace of Westphalia - the peace treaties that brought the Thirty Years' War to an end.
