Soon after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, a group of teenage resistance fighters called "Pugachi" formed in the occupied Zaporizhzhia region. Their leader was just 16 years old at the time. He told DW his story.

At just 16, Igor led a group of teenage resistance fighters in occupied Zaporizhzhia after Russia's 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Calling themselves "Pugachi," or "the owls," they burned Russian flags, spread anti-occupation flyers, and passed on troop locations.

Betrayed by collaborators, Igor was jailed, tortured, and charged with terrorism before being released. Now 19, he lives in Kyiv, studying construction, determined to build a future — and never regrets resisting.
