Astronomers studying the distribution of galaxies in the universe have discovered sponge-like structures strikingly similar to those seen by radiologists in human bones. Could methods from astrophysics help us better understand what makes bones stable?

Complex computational models developed by astrophysicist Christoph Räth may help to precisely predict the stability of different bone structures. Other researchers involved in the work have developed high-resolution X-ray devices that provide 3D images of the interior of the bone. They reveal fine structure that may offer clues to bone disorders like osteoporosis or brittle-bone disease.
