Snoring is often dismissed as a nuisance, but in some cases it can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea, a serious condition in which breathing repeatedly stops during sleep. Respiratory therapist Heiko Stopper knows this firsthand. He was diagnosed with sleep apnea himself and began treatment with a CPAP mask. In this report, he returns to the sleep lab for a follow-up assessment, while sleep specialists explain what happens in the body during pauses in breathing and why untreated sleep apnea can increase health risks.
