Thousands greet women's soccer team

October 14, 2003

Thousands of fans turned out to give the world champion German women's soccer team a hero's welcome in Frankfurt on Tuesday. The women, who beat Sweden 2-1 in the World Cup final near Los Angeles on Sunday, stood on a balcony overlooking the city's Römerplatz. Just a little over a year ago the same balcony held the men's national team, celebrated by thousands after finishing as runner's up in the World Cup in South Korea and Japan. "We were just a bit better," said striker Birgit Prinz. Some women's national team players were overcome with emotion at the sight of the flag-waving chanting fans. The women's team will now focus on repeating their success at the Olympic Games in Athens next August.
