There's lots of experimenting going on with different varieties of grapes. The only one that's really proved itself in German vinyards over the last decades is the "Regent". It has advantages over older strains: its bred to be highly fungus-resistant, so it needs little additional protection. And it has a nice dark color, calling Mediterranean wines to mind.
