Togo Coach: Germany Doesn't Have a Chance in World Cup

May 18, 2006

Members of the German national team should just hang up their boots and enjoy hosting fans and teams from around the world this summer, because they don't have an actual chance of winning the competition themselves, Togo's German coach Otto Pfister told Reuters on Wednesday.

"Germany have no chance. I don't think they can even get to the final, or even the semi-final," said Pfister, who took over as Togo coach in February. "I think if they get to the quarter-final they do very well.

"It's quite simple, you need skill and Germany doesn't have that," he added.

Togo will make their first World Cup appearance in a game against South Korea on June 13. Though Togo will go into all their matches as nearly hopeless underdogs, Pfister, who is meeting some of the players for the first time this week, said he is convinced anything can happen.

"You have the rankings, Brazil number one ... Togo number 59, Switzerland number, I don't know," he said. "It doesn't matter on the day, anyone can beat anyone on their day."
