Toxic smoke from hundreds of wildfires in central Canada is affecting air quality across parts of the United States, raising concerns ahead of the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey.

Speaking with DW, emergency physician Dr. Courtney Howard explained the health risks of wildfire smoke, including respiratory and cardiovascular problems linked to fine particulate pollution. She said vulnerable groups should stay indoors, and recommended N95 masks to reduce exposure.

Howard also discussed the impact of hazardous air on athletes, arguing that wildfire smoke should be treated as a major public health issue connected to climate change.
