300,000 Jews fled Germany during the Nazi regime. Families were violently torn apart. Scattered across every continent, they built their lives anew in exile. Some 70 years later, our film profiles three German-Jewish families and follows them through the 20th Century.

We accompany Sonja Mühlberger who is now based in Berlin on a trip to Shanghai, where she spent her childhood in exile; the Swarthout family from Montana, USA, as they look for their roots in Germany; and we meet the extended Hamburger family in São Paulo in Brazil.
