A number of car insurance companies in Italy set their premiums based on driving style. The system works out financially for drivers. There’s a catch, however: driver data is recorded, and their current position can be located.

A new type of insurance in Italy benefits good drivers. A GPS sensor records data on their speed, steering and braking behavior. Careful drivers pay less. In a country where insurance has traditionally been expensive due to the high rate of accidents, the system is proving popular. Data protection experts, however, see a hidden threat to user’s privacy.
