Labor in a bind

The transition to a more flexible labor market has led to the creation of millions of new jobs in Germany. In the latest example, companies are increasingly turning to special-order contracts. These are short-term deals that are basically given for one order at a time.

Trade unions oppose the initiative, fearing it could put more downward pressure on wages. But it also means once again that their concern is with those who already have a job. Carmen Meyer on the dilemma faced by trade unions.
