Many Israeli soldiers are struggling to cope with the psychological impact of their actions in Gaza. DW's Fanny Facsar spoke with a former combat soldier dealing with the mental health repercussions of his deployment.

Gil, an Israeli reservist, recalls the brutal Gaza war and fears a surge in soldier suicides. Deployed in 2023, he lived in bombed homes, endured the smell of death, and allegedly faced orders to kill on sight. Psychological injuries and trauma haunt many; nearly 300 soldiers attempted suicide in 19 months, 36 died. Experts warn these wounds shatter values and linger for life. Critics urge transparency on suicide data to help soldiers heal.

DW reached out to the Israeli military (IDF) regarding allegations that commanders ordered soldiers to fire at unarmed Palestinians in Gaza. The IDF rejected these claims, stating: "The IDF does not intentionally shoot at innocent civilians (…) Reports of harm to civilians are examined through the IDF’s verification mechanisms," the military told DW.
