Brandenburg Gate, Berlin
William and Kate's visit to Germany on July 19 is to begin with a walk through the Brandenburg Gate as they meet the crowds. Shaking hands, smiling and waving can be tiring. Few know, however, that there is a Room of Silence on one side of the gate - an oasis of peace in the midst of all the hoopla.

Holocaust Memorial, Berlin
The royal couple will also visit the Holocaust Memorial. A city block consisting of 2711 concrete slabs serves as a reminder of the six million European Jews murdered by the Nazi regime. While the memorial is too large to be overlooked, the underground documentation center is slightly harder to find. Among much else, it contains a list of names of Holocaust victims.

Berlin Zoo
As Prince George (3) and Princess Charlotte (2) are accompanying their parents, the family should definitely see the capital's latest celebrities, Meng Meng and Jiao Qing, in the Zoo Berlin. The two pandas chew thoughtfully on bamboo shoots all day long. The royal children might also like to feed the seals when the animals show off their acrobatic agility every morning at 10:30 am.

Clärchens Ballhaus, Berlin
This ballroom with beer garden is a wonderfully original venue. William and Kate are meeting creative people from the arts, culture, technology and fashion industries here. Hopefully they won't miss out on the best bit: the tango, walz and cha-cha. There's a dance course every evening, after which everyone is free to trip the light fantastic.

Heidelberg on the Neckar
This town's romantic riverside location, castle ruins and old town center are a perfect setting for the second day of the prince and his family's visit. While some tourists ply the Neckar on excursion boats, William and Kate will be taking part in a friendly rowing competition between the twinned towns of Cambridge and Heidelberg. After all, they are the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

'Studentenkarzer' Heidelberg
A stroll through the old town takes the couple past Germany's oldest university, the University of Heidelberg founded in 1385. Its old lock-up is well worth a look. Students had to lodge in this "students' prison" as punishment for minor transgressions such as disturbing the peace, drunkenness and dueling. Many immortalized themselves with doodles and graffiti on the walls.

Heidelberg Bridge Monkey
The children would certainly enjoy this amusing bronze monkey sculpture, the stroking of which is encouraged. It's believed that if you touch the monkey's fingers you will return to Heidelberg.

Heidelberg Castle Festival
William and Kate are scheduled to leave Heidelberg in the evening, but if they are delayed, there's a musical on the program at the Castle Festival on July 20 with a very appropriate title: Kiss Me, Kate!

Elbphilharmonie Hamburg
Hamburg is the third and last stop on the trip to Germany. The family is attending an interactive concert for children in the Elbphilharmonie. If the children get tired, that's no problem: Hamburg's newest landmark also houses a luxury hotel. The view of the city from the rooms is said to be fantastic - actually, much too good to nap through.

Amphibious bus, Hamburg
A boat tour on the Elbe river is already booked, but there are several possibilities. We recommend the HafenCity RiverBus. First it rolls through the city streets, and then it floats on the Elbe. A city tour and boat trip combined - you don't find that everywhere!

Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg
A walk through the Speicherstadt warehouse district and visit to the Maritime Museum are on the parents' agenda. There would be an exciting and time-saving alternative for their offspring: the Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg shows the city's most important sights in miniature. A small world for small people, though adults love it too.

A visit to Airbus in the Finkenwerder quarter
Hamburg's Airbus aviation and aerospace assembly site is open to all. Tours of the plant take place regularly from Monday to Saturday. Of course the British royals will be getting the VIP version. They're especially interested in seeing an A320 aircraft assembly line. Then the four will fly home directly from Finkenwerder Airport. Goodbye and come again soon!

It's the first time the British royal couple is visiting Germany together. William and Kate will be going to Berlin, Heidelberg and Hamburg from July 19-21. Their children George (3) and Charlotte (2) will be with them. The agenda mixes political, economic and cultural engagements with sightseeing. The British embassy in Berlin says the aim of the trip is to get to know the people in Germany through many personal encounters and to deepen Britain's friendship with Germany. But perhaps there will be time for seeing few places that aren't on official itinerary.
