Trigger finger

Trigger finger results when something prevents a tendon in a finger from sliding smoothly through the sheath that encases it. If the sheath is partially blocked, the tendon cannot enter it and the affected finger becomes temporarily stuck in a bent position.

The stuck tendon may suddenly pop past the swelling into the sheath, releasing the finger like a trigger. One cause of trigger finger is repetitive pressure over a period of time. If corticosteroid injections, physiotherapy and ointments don’t bring relief, an operation is indicated.
