There has been no reaction from Russia yet on the surprise ceasefire announcement, which follows days of intense pressure from the US president on Ukraine to halt its attacks on Russian oil refineries.

US President Donald Trump made a surprise announcement of an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine on Sunday that he said was "effective immediately."

It appears Trump didn't consult Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said he was still waiting to see details of the deal.

Trump's announcement came days after he declared a temporary easing of US sanctions on Russian diesel, prompting outrage in Europe and Kyiv.

DW spoke with Anastassia Fedyk, Assistant Professor of Finance at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley in California.
