In Washington, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have ratified a peace deal to end decades of conflict. The White House calls it a step toward stability — and a gateway to business in the mineral-rich region.

In the newly reopened Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace,  the leaders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo signed the "Washington Accords," a peace agreement aimed at ending a recent conflict in the DRC's northeast region.

The deal pledges ceasefire, disarmament and refugee return, but fighting persists between Congolese forces and M23 rebels, a militant group widely believed to be backed by Rwanda.

While the White House touts peace and business opportunities in mineral-rich Congo, analysts warn the accord may favor US interests over lasting stability.
