Trump's US to resettle white South Africans 'within days'
May 9, 2025
US President Donald Trump's administration is set to resettle the first group of white South Africans in the US next week, according to media reports on Friday.
The move follows Trump's sharp criticism of South Africa's land expropriation law, which he says will "enable the government of South Africa to seize ethnic minority Afrikaners' agricultural property without compensation."
What do we know about South African refugee plan?
The plan was first reported by news website The Lever, citing an April 30 memo saying the arrivals were expected "within a few days."
The first wave Afrikaners is set to arrive in the US any day now, according to The Lever's report. Emergency aid money would be lined up from the funding for refugees.
The plan is outlined in a memo signed by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy and Refugee Resettlement chief Andrew Gradison, it said, adding that the plan was for Washington to resettle up to 1,000 Afrikaners this year.
National Public Radio (NPR) and the New York Times reported that the group was due to arrive on Monday, although the Times cited officials saying the date could change.
Why is Trump offering asylum to white South Africans?
Trump, whose ally Elon Musk was born in South Africa, has accused Pretoria of "racial discrimination" against white farmers.
The Republican leader says the Land Expropriation Act will lead to the takeover of white-owned farms.
The law, signed in January, permits expropriation without compensation only in rare public-interest cases.
Trump also signed an executive order halting US aid to South Africa in response to the law.
Many Afrikaners, who are largely descendants of European settlers, are involved in farming in South Africa.
Until 1994, South Africa was ruled by Afrikaners under a strict Apartheid regime that denied the country's Black majority people essential political and economic rights.
In March, Washington expelled South Africa's ambassador Ebrahim Rasool, accusing him of hating both the US and Donald Trump.
Editors note: This story has been updated to indicate that Afrikaners are primarily descendants of European settlers and that they governed the country during apartheid.
