German Chancellor Angela Merkel has kicked off a two-day trip to Turkey with a visit to German troops stationed near the Syrian border. The soldiers are serving as part of a NATO mission to guard Turkey against possible missile attacks from Syria. On Monday Angela Merkel is due to hold talks with Turkey's president and prime minister on the country's prospects for EU membership.
