Tibetan exile groups under the guidance of the Dalai Lama have been campaigning for an end to human rights violations in the Chinese province for years. Last week thousands took the streets of major cities around the world, including Berlin, to mark the anniversary of a failed uprising against the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1959. By the end of the week, that wave of protests had spread to Tibet itself, provoking the riots and subsequent crackdown by Chinese security forces.
