The Charlemagne Prize - commmemorating the founder of the Holy Roman Emperor - is awarded by the German city of Aachen each year to someone seen to have made a lasting contribution to the unity of Europe. This year, the Award goes to the founder of the Community of Sant Egidio, a movement of lay people dedicated to evangelization and charity in Europe and around the world. Andrea Riccardi founded the movement in 1968 in Rome, when he was just 19 years old.
