'Tuna' made from algae — Tomorrow Today

Agriculture is going through radical changes. Algae and seaweed are on the menu, along with lab-grown meat. And is crop plant diversity in fields better than monocultures? This week: the food of the future.

A Berlin start-up is developing vegan tuna made from seaweed. The taste is convincing, but algae can contain pollutants like heavy metals. To produce a cleaner alternative, researchers are therefore working on new cultivation methods involving saline groundwater. Other hot topics in cutting-edge agriculture include lab-grown meat from animal cells and improving disease resistance in wheat through genetic diversity on fields. Livestock like sheep also have a role to play in how experts are rethinking sustainable agriculture. The future of nutrition is diverse, innovative and backed up by science.
